    @article{will2017d,
    abstract = {Precise position measurement with micrometer accuracy plays an important role in modern industrial applications. Herewith, a guided wave Six-Port interferometric radar system is presented. Due to limited matching and discontinuities in the radio frequency (RF) part of the system, the designers have to deal with DC offsets. The offset voltages in the baseband lead to worse relative modulation dynamics relating to the full scale range of the analog-to-digital converters and~ thus, considerably degrade the system performance. While common cancelation techniques try to estimate and extinguish the DC offsets directly, the proposed radar system is satisfied with equalizing both DC offsets for each of the two differential baseband signal pairs. Since the complex representation of the baseband signals is utilized for a subsequent arctangent demodulation, the proposed offset equalization implicates a centering of the in-phase and quadrature (I/Q) components of the received signal, which is sufficient to simplify the demodulation and improve the phase accuracy. Therefore, a standard Six-Port radar system is extended and a variable phase shifter plus variable attenuators are inserted at different positions. An intelligent algorithm adjusts these configurable components to achieve optimal I/Q offset cancelation.},

A separate calibration of the nonlinear detectors and the linear Six-port front-end enables an independent analysis of errors caused by detector nonlinearity and by the measurement scenario. A linearity analysis of various detectors in Six-port radar systems shows the necessity of a detector calibration for accurate displacement measurements. The calibration is evaluated with three different Six-port front-ends at 24 GHz in divers measurement scenarios. An error reduction of up to 50% has been achieved.},

This paper presents a new interrogation method for precise and fast frequency determination of passive SAW resonators based on instantaneous frequency measurement (IFM) by a low-cost Six-Port interferometer. By using a delay line, the frequency measurement is reduced to a phase measurement that can be instantaneously evaluated by the Six-Port network. No complex signal processing is necessary providing high update rates and low hardware costs. An in-depth analysis of the system concept and its building blocks is presented and the advantages as well as the limitations are discussed and compared to the current state-of-the-art. Finally, a demonstrator in the 2.4 GHz frequency band shows the feasibility and the precision of the concept with measurement times of only a few microseconds.},

    abstract = {Six-Port microwave interferometers are a lowcost as well as low-power type of radar sensor with a high phase accuracy, which can be used for precise displacement measurements. Near field effects strongly influence the signal characteristics of a reflection of the electromagnetic wave near the antenna, especially if the target is low reflective. In this paper a calibration procedure based on phase error correction by segmental polynomial approximation is proposed that utilizes these effects. After validating the functionality of the calibration algorithm and its improvement by comparison to a comparable state-of-the-art procedure, two further near field measurements are presented. A cardboard as well as a plastic plate are used as low reflecting targets to show the applicability of the proposed calibration procedure for diverse measurement scenarios.},

However, they show offsets as well as amplitude and phase imbalances in their differential in-phase and quadrature signals, leading to inaccuracies of the measured displacement. If a very slow moving or vibrating target has to be monitored, an additional phase shifter for calibration is needed, so that the system’s errors can be compensated. A method for calculation and compensation of errors is presented and a compact and cost-efficient implementation of a phase shifter for 24 GHz Six-port interferometers is shown.},

By using a delay line the frequency measurement can be reduced to a phase measurement that can be quickly evaluated by the Six-Port network implemented with lumped components. Measurements show that the delay line, currently realized by a SMA cable, is extremely sensitive to temperature variations even in the range of 0.1 K. Thus, a temperature compensation method based on reference measurements is proposed and final measurements show that the system can reach a calibrated and temperature compensated error of only a few parts per million (ppm).},

There is a great demand from the industry for the Six-port radar for applications like level metering, vibration analysis or positioning. A critical component of the Six-port radar is the detector. Good matching is necessary to avoid crosstalk between the four detectors of the Six-port and a perfect RF-short is needed to terminate the diode. In this talk, the design workflow for Schottky diode power detectors will be demonstrated. A first circuit design and simulation is done with Agilent Advanced Design System. The layout is imported into CST Microwave Studio as DXF file. By using a technology file, the 3D structure can be automatically generated. The results of both, time and frequency domain simulation, are compared with measurement results. With a circuit simulation in CST Design Studio comprising the Microwave Studio block, the manufacturer’s SPICE model is compared with measured S-Parameters of the Schottky diode. By using the diode’s measured S-Parameters and the frequency domain solver, a good agreement between simulation and measurement of the detector can be achieved.},

The proposed sensor structure consists of a quasi-TEM mode waveguide on the one hand and an interferometric Six-Port receiver structure on the other hand. The waveguide structure itself in combination with the liquid to be monitored acts as a reflection phase shifter. By superposing the reflected and the transmitted electromagnetic wave within a passive structure, the relative phase between both signals can be accurately obtained by means of the Six-Port principle. Thus, a change of the liquid level is directly related to the relative phase shift monitored by the Six-Port interferometer. In contrast to antenna based tank level sensors, the hereby presented system concept makes use of a novel waveguide structure. therefore, it is not sensitive to multi-target scenarios and multipath propagation.},

Plenty of current scientific publications demonstrate the effectiveness and versatility of the Six-Port radar for industrial, automotive and medical applications: accurate contactless vibration analysis, distance measurements as well as remote breath and heartbeat monitoring. Its highlights are excellent phase discrimination, trivial signal processing, low circuit complexity and cost. A joint project involving the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and InnoSenT GmbH led to the development of iSYS-5001, a compact, versatile Six-Port radar module aiming at a reliable high-integration of all subcomponents in one single sensor unit.},

Besides distance, determining an angle or modal analysis of vibrations are key issues for automation in modern fabrication. Industrial applications put high demands on the measurement systems, not only regarding precision but also concerning operation in harsh environments and low cost implementations. In the last years Six-Port technology got more and more important for these applications. This paper will give an overview of Six-Port technique for geometrical distance measurements.},

The shown system is based on the reduction of the frequency detection to a phase measurement with a delay line and a subsequent determination of the phase. By using a Six-Port structure, this phase can be evaluated very precisely, leading to a accurate frequency detection. Another remarkable point is the fast system response, because there is neither time consuming transformation to frequency domain nor long integration time required.},

The proposed DOA receiver is based on a phase detector using the interferometric Six-Port principle. For the proposed system an improved power detector concept using a High Electron Mobility Transistor has been developed featuring strictly square law behaviour to at least -15 dBm. Thus, the system offers a high dynamic range of more than 40 dB. The hereby presented system concept additionally has a switched delay line phase shifter for frequency estimation of the incoming electromagnetic wave. Moreover, the most important system components have been validated by measurements.},
